An emphatically modern portrait by Irma Stern of an unknown young woman with stylishly waved hair and fashionable dress leads a group of remarkable portrait paintings on offer at Strauss & Co’s forthcoming live sale at the Wanderers Club on 5 June.

On Monday night a previously unseen painting by JH Pieneef, Farm Jonkershoek with Twin Peaks Beyond, Stellenbosch, will go under the hammer at Strauss & Co’s June auction at the Wanderers Club in Johannesburg.

Important South African and International Art

The star of the show at Strauss & Co’s winter sale held last night at the Wanderers Club in Johannesburg was undoubtedly JH Pierneef, when a new all-time world record was set by his previously unseen painting, Farm Jonkershoek with Twin Peaks Beyond, Stellenbosch, which shattered its estimate of R6 000 000 – R8 000 000, by fetching a mammoth R20 462 400. This is the second highest price ever achieved for a painting sold at auction in South Africa.

Strauss & Co is delighted to announce the fourth installment of the annual August Art Month at Welgemeend, a month-long exhibition of South African art at one of Cape Town’s most renowned manor homes. The theme for this year’s winter exhibition is “Abstraction – South African art from the 50’s to the 70’s” and will showcase work from two important private collections, the Frank and Lizelle Kilbourn Collection and Pieter Colyn Collection.

A portrait of a raffish shepherd by Maggie Laubser, a stylised homage to Hieronymus Bosch by Alexis Preller, two drawings of William Kentridge’s fictional alter ego and a night sky landscape by John Meyer, form part of Strauss & Co’s substantial offering at its forthcoming live sale in Cape Town, which will be held at the Vineyard Hotel on 16 October.
